Welcome to the Marl Creek Website

Welcome to the website for the Marl Creek Interpretive Trail. This trail is a half-mile walking tour that takes you along Marl Creek through oak woods and meadows to a mill pond. This area was once farmed and grazed, but is now set aside as a sensitive riparian area for water quality protection and as a wildlife corridor. The trail is located on the scenic McCormick Farm near Steeles Tavern, Virginia. McCormick Farm is the historic home of Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the grain reaper that greatly changed agriculture in the early 1800's. The trail is designed to highlight how farming practices have changed since the days of Cyrus McCormick, especially along our streams and waterways.

Take yourself on a self-guided tour using the many interpretive stations and signs describing various attributes of stream habitats, from vegetation to wildlife to land management. You will see wetland habitat, riparian buffers, invasive species removal and native wildlife plantings. You can see the signs by taking a tour of the Virtual Trail.

Fabulous, fun programs, Activities and Service Projects for school children and their teachers are also offered at this site. Activity boxes full of great educational materials that enhance understanding of wildlife, native plants, and watershed issues are available on site. After your tour of the trail you may want to walk across the road and visit the grist mill once powered by the Marl Creek mill pond. You can also tour the nearby blacksmith shop and museum.
